Hunting Gun-Season Iowa Whitetails With Luke Hartle
Luke Hartle
It's no secret: If you want to kill the wall-hanger whitetail of a lifetime, go to Iowa. But the trick is getting a tag. Nonresident hunters wait years to accumulate enough preference points to hunt in the Heartland State.

As shown in this video with North American Hunter's Luke Hartle, it's often well worth the wait.

Luke's ultimate personal goal is to kill a giant, symmetrical 8-pointer. He saw a tempting specimen during the first day of the hunt, but it wasn't quite "enough" buck, so he let it walk. His decision was right on. A massive 5x5 appeared at dusk during the third evening. Luke set his eyes—and crosshairs—on the impressive animal at 130 yards, squeezed the trigger on his Mossberg FLEX slug gun, and ... missed? Nope. But watch the footage and, just like Luke, you'll probably find yourself scratching your chin after the shot.

With all 161 green-scored inches of antler in his hands, Luke's Iowa dreams finally became reality.
